Hempstead, N.Y. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (18-16, 6-10 ACC) fell late to Hofstra (25-8, 13-5 CAA) in the Round of 16 of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday, losing 65-57 at the Mack Athletic Complex in Hempstead, New York.
It was a close game throughout, but Virginia miscues down the stretch ultimately allowed Hofstra to go on a 14-6 run in the last six minutes of the game. The Cavaliers committed seven turnovers leading to 10 Hofstra fastbreak points.
“We had lapses, but I felt like we had the fight in us to come back. We just kept making mistakes that really cost us,” said Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle. “They are a great team and capitalized on them.”
The Hofstra Pride, led by Aleanna Leon’s 15 points, shot 48.1% from the field with seven three-pointers compared to the Cavaliers’ 35.1% and a dismal 2-11 from behind the arc.
In her final game at Virginia, senior Faith Randolph led the Cavaliers with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Lauren Moses scored a team-high 16 points in addition to 9 rebounds.
Randolph now ranks 17th all time on the career scoring list for Virginia with 1,346 career points.
Randolph is the only senior set to leave the program due to graduation. In addition, sophomore and leading scorer Mikayla Venson left the program before the start of the WNIT tournament.
