UVA Sports 5/31- 6/6 Weekly Recap

    #7 Baseball (38-22) : 17-4 Win vs. William & Mary, 8-6 Loss vs. East Carolina, 5-4 Loss vs. William & Mary

    The Virginia baseball team hosted the Charlottesville regional this weekend to begin NCAA postseason play. The Cavaliers got off to a great start, taking down William & Mary 17-4 in the opening game. Sophomore Ernie Clement drove in a career-high four runs in the win, as Virginia’s dominant offense was on display. Junior starter Alec Bettinger picked up the win after six innings of work.

    The ‘Hoos dropped a heart breaker against ECU in game two after allowing five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Pirates, who were selected to be the home team, walked off with a three run homer from Travis Watkins. UVa was in control all game, and entered the ninth with a 6-3 advantage. But the ECU offense came to life late, starting the ninth with four straight hits that would eventually lead to the walk off. Sophomore Tommy Doyle suffered the loss after coming in for relief in the eighth inning.

    Virginia’s season came to an end on Sunday after a 5-4 Loss to William & Mary eliminated the Cavaliers. The ‘Hoos responded to a 3-0 deficit with four straight runs of their own, but UVa again struggled to close the game. The Tribe scored the tying run in the bottom of the sixth before Charles Ameer hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to give W&M the lead and ultimately the victory. Junior Daniel Pinero led the Cavaliers with three hits and two RBI in the loss. This was the 13th consecutive season Virginia reached the NCAA Tournament, Division 1’s fifth-longest current streak.

    #14 Women’s Tennis (19-11)

    Senior Danielle Collins won her second NCAA Singles Championship on Monday after defeating North Carolina’s top seeded Hayley Carter in straight sets. Collins ends her career at UVa as only the seventh woman to ever win two NCAA singles championships.

    #23 Men’s Golf
    Virginia Junior Derek Bard finished tied for 17th in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships. His finish ranks fifth best among all UVa players. Bard will continue his golfing career in the USGA U.S. Open Tournament set to begin on June 16th.
