Queen Elizabeth II Dies at 96

News of Queen Elizabeth of England’s death was announced by Buckingham Palace on Thursday, September 8th, 2022. This followed an announcement made just hours earlier that the queen was on medical supervision. She died at the age of 96 in Balmoral Castle after 70 years of her reign. Her son, Charles, will step forward as King of England, with his wife Camilla becoming Queen Consort. The new King Charles III is expected to address Great Britain on Friday.

While the queen was a controversial figure during her lifetime, many people across the globe, especially within the commonwealth, have expressed their mourning at this time. The Charlottesville community remembers Queen Elizabeth’s visit to the University of Virginia in 1976, where photographers captured images of her walking the lawn.

The queen’s passing occurred just three days after the inauguration of a new prime minister, Liz Truss. The political implications of these two significant moments occurring so closely together are yet to be seen.
