Incoming first-year swimmer and diver, Joshua Richardson, died of unspecified causes during Summer Session III, according to an email sent by Dean of Students, Allen Groves, to the University community on Monday night.

Richardson was entering UVa. as a student-athlete after he received an offer to join the school’s swimming and diving team. Although originally a gymnast, Richardson began diving and was highly competitive in high school. He qualified for multiple USA Diving National Championships.

Richardson was from Mishawaka, Indiana and graduated from Marian High School this past spring. He is survived by his parents, Mark and Linda Richardson, and his 10 siblings.

Funeral services have not been scheduled at this time.

A self-described hard worker and avid learner, as written in his recruiting profile, Richardson had already made many friends at UVa. The University extends its condolences to his family.
