Fredericksburg Kicks off the Holiday Season with Community Events

With less than a month until fall semester reaches a close and winter break begins, it is becoming increasingly difficult to concentrate on exams and final papers.

Although Hoos’ heads will be immersed in books for the next few weeks, students who are looking for a break from exam season stress can travel about an hour away from Charlottesville to Fredericksburg Virginia, where numerous small town festivities are taking place to celebrate the holiday season.

This upcoming weekend alone has many fun events that students would enjoy attending.

On Saturday, December 3, two different holiday parades will be in the area. The City of Fredericksburg Christmas Parade 2016 will occur in the historic downtown district. Beginning at 5:30 pm, this free event will march throughout the city, with many different floats following the theme of “Sights and Sounds of Christmas.” Last year the parade was voted the #1 Best Community Event from Fredericksburg.com and is a spectacle that is not to be missed.

Additionally, Spotsylvania county (a county in the Fredericksburg area) will be hosting its 38th annual Christmas Parade.  Starting at 1:00pm on Saturday December 3rd, the parade will follow the theme of “A Hollywood Holiday.” This parade will be held in the downtown Spotsylvania Courthouse area and will be escorted by the Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.

The following night at 4:45 pm, Spotsylvania county will also hold the Courthouse Christmas Luminary. At this free event, holiday candle lighting will take place outside the Historic Courthouse Lawn. The event also features performances from local choirs will, setting the holiday mood.

Fredericksburg also offers a myriad of other seasonal activities. The American Swing Music and Dance Association is hosting Swing Dancing every Saturday from now until January 21st at the Eagle Village at Jefferson Davis Highway at 7:30.  For only $9 a person, intro swing-dancing lessons will be offered and no partner is required.

Information for these events can be found online at www.visitfred.com
