Dr. Melina Kibbe to Take Over as Dean of the School of Medicine

WUVA News has learned that Dr. Melina Kibbe will be taking over as the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Chief Health Affairs Officer for UVA Health, effective September 15, 2021. This announcement was released via an email to faculty of the School of Medicine.

For the past five years, Kibbe has served as the Colin G. Thomas Jr. Distinguished Professor and Chair for the Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina, as well as a Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Before her time at UNC, Dr. Kibbe spent time in various positions at Northwestern University and the United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

Kibbe received her Bachelor’s and Doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago, before completing residencies at the University of Pittsburgh and Northwestern University.

Dr. Kibbe will be taking over for Dr. David S. Wilkes, who has served as the Dean of the School of Medicine since 2015. As of this time, Dr. Wilke’s future plans are unknown.
