UVA Volleyball (8-4, 1-1 ACC) went on the road for two matchups with North Carolina schools. They fell to the N.C. State Wolfpack (7-5, 1-0 ACC) and defeated the UNC Tar Heels (11-2, 0-2 ACC).
In the ACC opener on Friday the 24th, UVA fell 3-1 to N.C. State. After dropping set one, the Hoos responded with an impressive 25-14 set two victory, registering eight kills and just two errors while NC State had nine kills and nine errors. Despite getting six more aces and four more blocks, UVA was unable to pull out the victory in the match, as NC State won sets three and four.
Jade Parchment had an impressive 18 kills for the Wolfpack and setter Kristen McDaniel had 42 assists. Brooklyn Borum led the Hoos with 15 kills and Alana Walker continued her dominance at the net with nine blocks. Borum also registered her third double-double of the season with 11 digs.
Before Sunday afternoon, UNC’s only loss was at the hands of #4 Pittsburg. However, the Hoos were able to earn a 3-1 victory in enemy territory to finish the weekend with a huge momentum boost.
UVA came out with a 25-17 victory in set one and then UNC responded in set two with a 25-15 victory. After that, the game became even more intense. UVA hitters came alive in the final two sets to record 29 kills and just eight errors as well as nine blocks to take the sets 26-24 and 25-21. Overall, the Hoos had 17 blocks and the Tar Heels managed only seven.
Brooklyn Borum continued her hot streak with 14 kills and 11 digs, earning a double-double in back-to-back matches. Mary Shaffer added 11 kills and five blocks, and Alana Walker had 10 kills and 11 blocks. All three hitters were efficient with hitting percentages of .250 or higher, highlighted by a .317 hitting percentage from Borum.
After toppling a tough team, UVA will face an even more challenging matchup in Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The Panthers are ranked #4 in the country and are currently undefeated.
