On Sunday afternoon, the Virginia women’s basketball team improved their record to an undefeated 12-0 with an 84-28 blowout win over Morgan State at John Paul Jones Arena. UVA’s 12-0 start to the season is their best start to any season since 1991. This is also the first time that UVA has won 12 consecutive games since 1995.
Overall, the Cavaliers delivered a completely dominant performance from start to finish on both ends of the floor. Despite struggling in the first half offensively with turnovers, the Hoos were able to hold Morgan State to just 14 points to jump out to a 33-14 lead at the half. In the second half, Virginia played much better offensively while maintaining their excellent defense to come away with an 84-28 win over the Lady Bears.
In the win, Mir McLean led the way in scoring for UVA, recording a game-high 16 points to go along with a game-high 9 rebounds. Camryn Taylor had a big game for the Cavaliers as well, finishing with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 4 blocks. Finally, Sam Brunelle was also in double figures for the Hoos, scoring 13 points. As a team, Virginia shot nearly 56% from the floor and made 6 of their 15 three point attempts. Meanwhile, Morgan State struggled mightily offensively, shooting just under 17% from the floor and going 0 for 19 from the three point line. The Hoos also had a massive 51 to 30 rebounding advantage over the Lady Bears in the victory.
Following the victory over Morgan State, Virginia has finished their non-conference schedule as the only undefeated team remaining in the ACC despite still somehow being unranked. The Cavaliers next return to action in their ACC opener against the Duke Blue Devils on the road this Wednesday night at 7 PM.
