On Sunday afternoon, the Virginia Cavalier women’s basketball team finished off an emotional week with a 74-60 win over the American Eagles on the road, improving their record to an impressive 5-0 to start the season. The Hoos’ 5-0 start to 2022 is their best start since the 2015-2016 season.
During the game, Virginia honored and paid tribute to Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, and D’Sean Perry with patches on their jerseys with the numbers 1, 15, and 41.
In the first quarter, the Hoos started off strong offensively with 8 different Cavaliers scoring to take a 20-16 lead over the Eagles. UVA’s balanced scoring offense continued in the second quarter to help the Cavaliers take a 35-31 lead over American at halftime.
In the second half, American was able to keep the game close with several baskets from Kayla Henning. Henning would finish the game as the leading scorer for the Eagles, recording 18 points on 8/11 shooting. However, Virginia would pull away from the Eagles in the 4th quarter, as Taylor Valladay began to take over on both ends of the floor for the Hoos. Valladay finished the game as the leading scorer for UVA with a season-high 19 points and 3 steals. Mir McLean was also great on both ends of the floor for the Hoos, recording her 3rd career double-double on 11 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Sam Brunelle scored in double figures as well for the Cavaliers, recording 13 points to help Virginia secure a 74-60 win over American.
Overall, all 11 players that played in the game for Coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton scored for the Hoos, which is the 3rd time this season that every player that played for Virginia scored in a game. The Cavaliers were also able to turn American over an incredible 23 times. Finally, the Hoos were able to dominate the glass, as UVA outrebounded the Eagles 45-30 in the game.
Following a very emotional week, Virginia returns home to John Paul Jones Arena to take on Campbell this Wednesday at 7 PM.
