The Virginia Cavaliers are the 2019 ACC men’s soccer champions! After falling behind 1-0 to the No.1 ranked Clemson Tigers, the Hoos scored three consecutive goals in the second half to win their first ACC Championship since 2009 and 16th title in program history.
Clemson’s James Brighton gave the Tigers the lead in the 18th minute, scoring only the 7th goal UVA has allowed this season. The Cavaliers tied the game in the 65th minute with Axel Gunnarsson’s first career goal. With just under nine minute remaining, Daniel Steedman played a corner kick to Cabrel Happi Kamseu, who put the ball in the back of the net to give the Cavaliers the lead for good. Robin Afamefuna added an insurance goal less than two minutes later on a penalty kick.
Four Cavaliers were named to the ACC All-Tournament Team, including Henry Kessler, who was also named the Tournament MVP.
Virginia will look to continue their success when the NCAA Tournament begins this week.
