Recently, UVA Health was awarded two $7.5 million dollar grants by the Leducq Foundation, in an effort to combat atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can be understood as the hardening of the arteries due to a buildup of plaque which causes the arteries to narrow, preventing blood flow. Diseases linked to atherosclerosis have become the leading cause of death in the United States, and two UVA researchers have been awarded grants to prevent atherosclerosis, each with varying techniques.
