On Friday, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine visited the University of Virginia School of Medicine to speak with students about the future of the Affordable Care Act.
Kaine’s lecture coincided with Friday’s Congressional vote that approved the first step toward repealing ACA, also known as Obamacare. Kaine adamantly opposes the abandonment of the Affordable Care Act, but held an open forum to hear students’ thoughts and reactions. While Kaine has been holding meetings with healthcare stakeholders across Virginia since December, Friday’s hour-long talk was his first discussion with medical students on the topic. He devoted the majority of his time to answering questions.
“If you were to repeal the ACA, it would really hurt reproductive healthcare and it would really hurt rural hospitals. Hearing that priority from some of the students was important for me, too.”
Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, was elected to the Senate in 2012 and served as Hillary Clinton’s running mate in the 2016 presidential election. As the former Governor of Virginia, Kaine has long supported UVa and involved himself in academics on Grounds.
