Albemarle County police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred Sunday afternoon at Stonefield shopping center in Charlottesville. A mother, father, and daughter were crossing the street when they were struck by a car. Police confirmed that the 57-year-old mother, Bonnie Baha, died from her injuries.
The family was crossing District Street before 1pm when they were hit by a Toyota Camry making a left turn into the shopping center. The three pedestrians were taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center via ambulance, where Mrs. Baha succumbed to her injuries. The father and daughter were treated for non-life threatening injuries, while the driver was unharmed.
The Baha family, from San Marino, California, was in town to drop off their son at the University for his first year.
Police report that the identity of the driver has not been released and no charges have been filed yet, as the incident is still under investigation. Officials plan to make additional details public once more information about the tragedy comes to light.
This is the fifth fatal crash in Albemarle county this year. Witnesses or those with information about the accident are asked to call Officer R. Jamerson at (434) 296-5807.
