This past weekend at Davenport Field, no.10 Virginia hosted Wake Forest in a busy three game series, which was compressed into two days due to weather. The Hoos defeated the Demon Deacons in both games of Friday’s Double Header, 4-0 and 6-4, before losing Saturday 9-8 after a tough fight.
In game one on Friday, sophomore Adam Haseley led the team with three hits—two doubles, and a single. Virginia was out-hit by Wake Forest 7-6, but the Demon Deacons left 10 runners on base.
Junior Connor Jones pitched 7.1 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the season.
In game two on Friday, the Cavaliers struck first, resulting in a 1–0 lead. Both teams continued to battle throughout the game, matching each other run-for-run, until the 8th inning, where UVA scored an additional insurance run, bringing the final tally to 6-4.
Junior Tyler Shambora retired the final seven batters he faced, pitching 4 scoreless innings, earning his second win on the year.
Haseley remained hot in game two, and continued his big day at the plate by adding two triples, a double, and a single. Virginia finished with 17 hits to Wake Forest’s 12.
On Saturday, the Demon Deacons came to avenge their two losses, taking an 8-1 lead into the 8th. Virginia would not go down without a fight as they scored seven runs in three innings to even the score. However, Wake Forest continued to fight, scoring a run at the top of the ninth and holding onto their lead to secure the victory.
The Cavaliers are scheduled to play James Madison University at Davenport Field on Tuesday at 4pm.
