Charlottesville’s Great Harvest Bread Company is raising money for the UVa Children’s Hospital by making Honey Bunnies, a local staple treat for the Easter season. For each bunny purchased, one dollar will be donated to the UVa Children’s Hospital.
The bunnies are made of the company’s signature honey whole wheat bread with five ingredients: grains, yeast, water, honey, and salt. Great Harvest mills their own grains, and no two bread bunnies are exactly the same. This year, the bunnies are priced at $10 and $15 each.
The company has been making Honey Bunnies for several years as a symbol of Easter, but the owner of the Charlottesville location, Alieen Magnotto, decided to donate a portion of the sales to a charity this year.
“I wanted to tie it [the production of the Honey Bunnies] with being Christian. Lent is all about giving back and supporting the community,” said Magnotto.
Students from the Covenant School Club bagged and decorated the bunnies, and they chose the UVa Children’s Hospital as the charity that will receive this year’s donation. UVa Children’s Hospital provides care, in more than 30 specialties, to children throughout Virginia. The hospital has a pediatric emergency department, a neonatal intensive care unit for infants and a pediatric intensive care unit for children under 18.
Great Harvest is also very involved within both the Charlottesville community and the UVa community, and this past week, the business donated food to UVa’s Relay for Life that was held at Carr’s Field. They also donate bread slices to other charities on a daily basis.
