The number 15 will never be worn by another Cavalier as former two-time All-American Malcolm Brogdon will have his jersey retired on Monday, February 20th. A ceremony will take place at John Paul Jones Arena in conjunction with the Miami vs. UVA basketball game at 7 p.m.
Brogdon joins the likes of seven other former Virginia men’s basketball players who have had their numbers retired: Jeff Lamp (3), Barry Parkhill (40), Ralph Sampson (50), Sean Singletary (44), Bryant Stith (20), Wally Walker (41), and Buzzy Wilkinson (14).
Brogdon was selected in the second round of the National Basketball Assosciation’s draft by the Milwaukee Bucks this past summer and is currently playing in his rookie season. He is averaging 7.7 points and 2.8 assists per game.
Nicknamed “Humble Moses” and “The President” by his teammates, Brogdon graduated this past May with a well-known reputation for being a respectable leader both on and off the court.
On the court, Brogdon was both a first-team All-American and NABC Defensive Player of the Year in 2016. He was a three-time All-ACC first team performer in addition to becoming the first player to be named ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year in the same season in 2016. In 2015, Brogdon earned second-team All-American honors.
At Virginia, he ranks ninth all-time in scoring (1,809 points), first in free throw percentage (87.6%), second in games played (136), sixth in 3-point field goal percentage (36.5%), seventh in 3-pointers (185), and ninth in free throws (422).
He contributed to 111 Virginia wins, four NCAA tournament appearances, two ACC regular-season titles, and one ACC tournament championship during his time with the Cavaliers.
Off the court, Brogdon earned a master’s degree in public policy in only 5 years through an accelerated program in the Frank Batten School of Public Policy and Leadership. His undergraduate major was in History.
He was a John R. Wooden Citizen Cup finalist for his excellence in the classroom and community, he was named to the Senior CLASS All-American first team in honor of achievement in classroom, community, character, and competition, and he was named an Allstate NABC Good Works Team honoree.
Head coach Tony Bennett said, “[He] represented everything that is right about being a student-athlete. What a model for making an impact on the court, in the classroom, and the community. I couldn’t be happier to see No. 15 raised to the rafters.”
Brogdon displayed his citizenship as a reader and mentor to fifth-grade students at Broadus Elementary School in Charlottesville, a mentor at the Charlottesville Boys and Girls Club, a visitor for patients at local hospitals, and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
Brogdon was selected for the 2016 USA Men’s Select Team this past summer.
He was also recognized as Virginia’s top male athlete in the 2015-2016 academic year.
