18th Annual Dance Marathon to Take Place on Saturday

This Saturday, April 2 UVA will host its annual Dance Marathon to benefit the UVA Children’s Hospital.

Dance Marathon challenges members of the university community to stay on their feet for 15 consecutive hours whilst taking part in any of the several events offered throughout the day. Special events range from performances by several of UVA’s a cappella groups to a silent auction to line dancing. Insomnia cookies and Crozet pizza will also be provided.

For fourth year exec officer Alexis Unwalla, Dance Marathon has played a consistently large role in her collegiate career.

“It’s more than just an organization that raises money,” says Unwalla. “It’s a community that comes together to better the lives of hundreds of children who seek treatment at the UVA children’s hospital.”

As part of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the UVA Children’s Hospital provides primary and specialty care in more than 30 specialties and works at the forefront of medical discoveries. The connection of the hospital to the UVA community is part of what makes the Dance Marathon experience such a personal one for many.

“Not a lot of other philanthropic organizations allow you to actually meet and know the people you’re fundraising for,” continues Unwalla.
Over the past 18 years, the organization has raised over $700,000 through fundraising and donations. In the months leading up to the event, Dance Marathon has spearheaded fundraising events such as a shopping benefit evening and dunk tanks in the Amphitheatre, even managing to raise $5,123 in one day.

The event will take place in Mem Gym from noon to 10pm.
