WASHINGTON – The Virginia men’s basketball team is headed to the ACC Tournament championship game on Saturday with their big win over the Miami Hurricanes Friday night.
The ‘Hoos came out strong taking a 10-2 lead over the Hurricanes in the first five minutes of the game. The ‘Hoos kept the lead over the ‘Canes through the entire first half.
ACC Player of the Year Malcolm Brogdon led Virginia with 10 points going into halftime. Senior Mike Tobey followed close behind with 6 points, 4 rebounds and a block.
UVa led Miami at the half 36-31.
The ‘Hoos had some scoring trouble early in the second half, but it did not take long for both Brogdon and junior London Perrantes to dominate the scoring for Virginia. The two led the team in scoring, Brogdon finishing the game with 24 points and Perrantes with 11.
Sophomore Mariel Shayok followed not far behind contributing 10 points in the win.
Miami started to make a comeback towards the end of the game, getting within four points of Virginia in the remaining 30 seconds; however, it was not enough.
UVa beat Miami 73-68, and with the win the ‘Hoos advance to the ACC Tournament Championship against UNC.
Coach Tony Bennett commented on the team’s performance against Miami: “I love the resiliency and the warrior-like attitude that I ask from them. They laid it all out there and now they get a chance to contend for it tomorrow.”
