The Syracuse Orange buried five three-pointers and scored 20 points in overtime to defeat the Virginia Cavaliers 63-55 Saturday evening at John Paul Jones Arena.
UVA’s poor shooting continued against Syracuse’s famed zone defense, as the Hoos shot just 7 of 31 from three-point range and 31.3% from the field. The Cavaliers also turned the ball over 15 times to go along with 15 team assists.
Jay Huff lead UVA with 16 points and 10 rebounds but made just 2 of his 7 free throw attempts. Kihei Clark and Mamadi Diakite added 13 points each.
Virginia trailed for much of the first half and into the second but their defense kept it close. The Hoos went on a 12-0 run to take a five-point lead in the second half, but then went on a scoring drought of 7 minutes.
In the five-minute overtime period, the Orange scored more points (20) than they did in the entire second half (19) and sank five of their six three-point attempts, including a desperation heave from near half-court from Buddy Boeheim that rattled in off the backboard as the shot clock expired.
Virginia has lost back to back games for the first time since the 2016-17 season and the road will only get tougher for the Hoos as they travel to Tallahassee to face the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles Wednesday night at 7pm.
